Giving birth, naturally or by C-Section, will have a big impact on your body. Even though women are designed to have babies, the birth process can still cause stresses, strains and sometimes injury. After your baby is born, you will need time to heal. Although some pain and soreness is normal, do you know how much is too much?
There are plenty of other indicators besides pain that could mean you need medical attention. Make sure you and your partner both know the warning signs, so you can contact your healthcare provider.
If you had a Caesarean delivery, you may experience any of the symptoms listed below with the exception of vaginal pain. Instead, you will have incision pain, which should decrease each day and not get worse. Your doctor will prescribe a painkiller to help you cope with the pain from your incision. Taking this medication will help you feel better so you can enjoy your baby; drugs can be used that do not interfere with breastfeeding.
A Caesarean delivery is major abdominal surgery. Your physical recovery will take longer so you have to be more careful about activity. No heavy lifting for six weeks, as this may cause your incision to separate.
In addition, you will have to monitor your incision for bleeding and infection. If it starts to bleed, you will require immediate attention. If this happens, go to the hospital emergency department immediately.
Take notice of any signs of infection in your incision; redness, swelling, oozing (particularly yellow or green pus), fever and a foul odour. If you experience any of these symptoms, you need to contact your healthcare provider for treatment.
