Eye Dropper Planets

Here’s an activity that will encourage your child to explore a rainbow of colours as he creates his own solar system! Mixing colours and making designs is a wonderful way to spend Comfort, Play & Teach™ time together!

You will need:
  • Eye droppers
  • Food colouring (primary colours)
  • Muffin tins
  • Coffee filters
  • Plastic place mat
  • Hole puncher
  • String

Instructions:
  • Pour a different colour of food colouring into each cup of a muffin tin. You can create different colours by combining primary colours.
  • Show your child how to use an eye dropper. First squeeze the bulb and then dip the end of it into the food colouring. Release the bulb to fill the dropper. Your child can also use a plastic spoon to scoop and pour the food colouring.
  • Place a coffee filter onto the plastic mat. Your child can squirt different colours onto the coffee filter, creating interesting designs.
  • Allow the coffee filter to dry and then display it by punching a hole in the top, affixing a string and dangling it from the ceiling.
  • Your child can make several eye-dropper planets and create her own solar system!

Enjoy this more with Comfort, Play & Teach™:

Comfort

Comfort:Comment on what your child is doing as he chooses different colours and creates unique patterns. He will enjoy the special attention and feel encouraged to spend more time at the activity.

Play

Play:Make up stories together about what happens on each planet that your child is creating. Who lives on them? What do they look like? What do they do? Are they like people on earth? How are they different?

Teach

Teach:Encourage your child to identify different colours. Talk about what happens when two colours are combined to create a new one. Ask, “What happened when we mixed the red and blue food colouring?”
