Disruptions in your Baby's Routine during the Holidays

During the holidays, people’s routines change due to time off from work and to the many gatherings, parties and rituals of the season. This can be a source of stress for parents, and it can also be upsetting to young children.

Babies rely on routines to feel secure, and you comfort them when you provide stability and predictability. Even in the whirlwind of the holiday season, there are some things you can do to ensure that your infant has a sense of security:
  • Make sure your plans for the day will not force you to rush from one activity to the other; having smooth and slow transitions between events will go a long way towards helping your baby feel calm and confident.
  • Be aware of your baby’s needs and moods. Responding to his needs in a predictable way and letting him know he can count on you is especially important when his routine is disrupted.
  • Babies will sense it if you are stressed and distracted by a million details. Don’t forget to take care of yourself during these busy times by getting enough sleep, eating well and having a few minutes for yourself during the day.
