Creating and then putting together number puzzles is a fun way for toddlers and preschoolers to solve problems and to practice their counting skills. Adults and children can enjoy some Comfort, Play & Teach™ time talking about and counting different stickers!
You will need:
- Bristol board
- Scissors (for adult use)
- Stickers (e.g., hearts, flowers, dinosaurs, cars etc.)
Instructions:
Cut pieces of Bristol board into different shapes, such as hearts, squares, circles and then cut these shapes in half to create two-piece puzzles. On one half of the puzzle, write a number, such as three. Encourage your child to put the corresponding number of stickers on the other half of the puzzle. Help her by counting aloud and holding up your fingers.

Comfort:
- Assembling puzzles helps children to build confidence in their thinking skills, as they match the correct number of stickers to the number symbol. Show how proud you are of children's attempts to put matching puzzle pieces together!

Play:
- Provide objects for children to count. This enables them to engage their senses in learning about numbers. It also provides something concrete that can be matched to the pictures.

Teach:
- Cutting the post cards into different shapes encourages shape recognition as well as counting. Children will gain valuable practice in using new words to name and describe shapes as well as learning number concepts.
