New Activity: Grocery Store I Spy

The next time you and your child are out food shopping, try this fun Comfort, Play & Teach™activity. How many letters, numbers and words can your child recognize at the grocery store?

Instructions:
As you walk through the store, make a game of helping your child to notice and identify familiar items. For example, say, “I Spy something green and leafy that we make into salad” or “ I Spy a yellow box with the letter ‘C’ on it, and it’s your favourite cereal”. This will encourage your child to pay attention to details, to recognize letters and colours, and to label things he knows.

Enjoy this more with Comfort, Play & Teach™:

Comfort:

  • When your child recognizes words on boxes and containers praise her efforts and restate what she has told you (e.g., “You’re right, that’s a box of Tasty Rice!”). Let her know that you are proud of what an excellent reader she is becoming.

Play:

  • Playing I Spy and telling riddles are fun ways to build your child’s memory, thinking and language skills. Games engage him in sharing information that he has learned from experience.

Teach:

  • Using the clues that you provide to notice letters and words in the environment and to name familiar foods and products helps your child to develop her emerging reading skills.
