Nursery rhymes, with their wonderful rhythms and rhyme schemes, encourage toddlers and preschoolers to use their developing language skills. Reciting a familiar nursery rhyme provides some Comfort, Play & Teach™ time for you to play, laugh and talk with your child!
One, two, buckle my shoe
Three, four, shut the door
Five, six, pick up sticks
Seven, eight, lay them straight
Nine, ten, a great, big hen!
Cluck, cluck, cluck!

Comfort
- After several repetitions, say the rhyme leaving out the last word of each line for your child to fill in. Reciting it in this playful way enables her to practice the listening and turn-taking skills she will use when enjoying conversations with the people she loves.

Play
- With each repetition of the rhyme, use different voices. For example, say one line loudly, and one softly. Say one line using a high voice, the other using a low voice. Say one line quickly and the other very slowly. The silliness is sure to bring giggles and show your child creative ways to use her own voice!

Teach
- Hearing and saying counting rhymes encourages your child to understand the order of numbers and to use their names. As you say the rhyme, hold up your fingers so that your child can see how many there are, and begin to understand the connection between the words for numbers and the objects being counted.
